Students with Overseas Qualifications

This section is aimed at students with overseas qualifications who would like to take official postgraduate studies (Master or PhD) at the UIB. Such students are not required to have their degrees officially recognised by the Spanish education authorities. Access to a programme shall in no way imply recognition of the prior degree held by the interested party, or its recognition for any other purposes than to access master's degree studies. Students with overseas degrees recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education will follow the pre-registration process undertaken by students with Spanish degrees.

If you are interested in having your overseas qualification (bachelor or master) officially recognised by the Spanish education authorities, please contact the Spanish Ministry of Universities.

If you are interested in having your overseas PhD qualification officially recognised in Spain, please visit the 'Equivalence Statement' section on the UIB Doctoral School website.

Students who would like to take an official postgraduate programme at the UIB must pre-register. The pre-registration procedure involves students applying for a place on one or several UIB postgraduate programmes and comprises the following stages:

2. Entry: Assessment and Resolution

The Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CEP) and the Doctoral School of the University of the Balearic Islands (EDUIB) will assess and verify applicants meet the entry requirements, i.e. their qualifications grant admission to official postgraduate programmes at the UIB.

The following entry requirements will be taken into account:

Entry Requirements for Master’s Programmes with Overseas Qualifications
  • A university degree issued by a higher education institution in another EHEA member state, enabling admission to a master's programme within the EHEA
  • Graduates from non-EHEA education systems may be admitted to official master's programmes without having to validate their qualifications. In this instance, the UIB will verify the qualifications in question have an equivalent level of training to the corresponding official Spanish university degree programmes and enable admission to postgraduate programmes in the issuing country. This entry method in no way represents accreditation for applicants' qualifications or their recognition for any purposes other than entry to master's programmes.

More information on entry and admission for master's programmes.

Entry Requirements for PhD Studies with Overseas Qualifications
  • An official university degree issued within the EHEA enabling admission to master’s programmes and having completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits, where at least 60 are from a master’s degree
  • Graduates from an EHEA education system may be admitted to PhD programmes without having to validate their qualifications. In this instance, it must equate to a level-7 qualification within the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and enable admission to PhD programmes in the issuing country. This entry method in no way represents accreditation for applicants' qualifications or recognition for any purposes other than entry to PhD programmes
  • Another PhD qualification.

Where an entry resolution is favourable, the CEP and/or EDUIB will forward the pre-registration application to the relevant body for the programme. This body will assess and decide on entry. A list of accepted candidates will be published.

Where entry is denied, students will receive a notification in their personal folder on the UIB e-services portal. They will need to use their UIB credentials to access this information. This resolution brings the procedure comes to an end. Nonetheless, students have the right to file the relevant appeals.

3. Admission: Assessment and Resolution

Where students' qualifications are deemed acceptable, their application will be forwarded to the relevant body for the programme. This body will assess and decide on admissions. Where admission is denied, the procedure comes to an end. Nonetheless, students have the right to file the relevant appeals.

6. Recommendations

Obtaining a Visa

Overseas students who are not Spanish residents and enrol on UIB programmes with face-to-face teaching must obtain a visa before travelling to Majorca.

Admitted students requiring an official letter of admission issued by the UIB in order to apply for a student visa at the Spanish embassy or consulate in their home country, or for any other procedure linked to studying at the UIB, may request it at the following e-mail addresses: <masterarrobauib.es> or <escoladedoctoratarrobauib.es>. They must state which information must be included in the letter.

The university is not liable for visas being refused or any delay in issuance hindering them from following academic activities. In these instances, students may request partial or full cancellation of their enrolment due to unforeseen circumstances.

Fee Supplement for Academic Services

Overseas students over the age of 18 who do not have residency status, except citizens of EU Member States, and those where EU rules apply, without prejudice to the reciprocity mechanism, must pay a 30% supplement to the public fee for relevant undergraduate and master's academic services. Nevertheless, the UIB may sign agreements with overseas institutions to amend this supplement.

Overseas students who accredit their residency status (which must be valid at the start of the academic year) and who have been charged the supplement, may request a refund.

In order to request a refund, students must submit the relevant accrediting documents (NIE or a favourable resolution stating the valid start and end dates) in-person at the admin services for their programme (by appointment only) or at any government registry support office (OMAR).

Degree Certificate and Academic Transcript

In order to request issuance of their degree certificate and academic transcript, students must have submitted original entry and admission documents for the programme.

Students are advised to have carried out all necessary procedures before returning home.

Both the academic transcript and degree certificate receipt for master's degrees are issued with a Secure Verification Code (SVC) on the automated response form.

Legalisation and Validation of Awarded Qualifications

Students are advised to have carried out all legalisation and validation procedures for their programme before returning home. Therefore, before leaving Majorca, please look into the procedures and documents required by the processing body.

The document preparation application for legalisation and validation may be submitted either in-person or via the electronic register with the general CEP or EDUIB application form, where applicable. Students must state the specific documents they require, language of issuance and delivery method. Document preparation fees apply.
