The Master's Degree in Environmental Radiation Protection is a joint programme leading to the award of an official master's degree issued by the participating institutions:

• University of the Balearic Islands, as the coordinating institution
• University of Barcelona
• University of Cantabria
• Universidad de Extremadura
• University of Huelva
• University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
• University of Valencia.

The programme will introduce the foundations, principles and concepts linked to nuclear physics, radioactivity, radiochemistry and radioecology to underpin solid knowledge in the area. It will also teach subjects on quality assured measurement techniques for radioactivity and statistical processing, and mathematical analysis of experimental findings. The programme will be supplemented by offering students training in tools for ionising radiation dosimetry and risk assessment for environmental radiation in general, and for radon and in NORM industries more specifically. Students will be introduced to the current regulatory framework for ionising radiation. Moreover, they will learn an initial approach to quality control for environmental radiation labs, since this field requires labs to hold UNE-EN-ISO 17025 accreditation for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.

In turn, the programme will also include lab practicals where students will learn relevant aspects for achieving reliable results, such as taking and preserving samples, chemical processing to separate radionuclides, measurement techniques, instrument calibration, quantifying activities, doubts and detection limits, calculating doses, radioactive risk assessment, quality control and writing reports. Moreover, students will undertake external placements at sector businesses and/or organisations to become familiar with current professional profiles.

Lastly, students will research, write and publicly defend a master's thesis. The thesis enables students to undertake scientific research where they can demonstrate the level of training they have acquired on the programme.

The graduate profiles for the Master's Degree in Environmental Radiation Protection can be grouped into four areas:

• Research staff in training who may join current research groups into environmental radiation protection (e.g. groups in Spain have wide experience and renowned international standing which need to ensure current members can be replaced as they progress in their career)
• Specialised technical professionals at businesses linked to the entire production cycle for nuclear energy (e.g. mining, manufacture of fuel assemblies, production of nuclear energy, waste management, etc.)
• Specialised technical professionals in a wide range of engineering businesses and Radiation Protection Services and Technical Units
• Specialised technical professionals in radioactive facilities, such as radiation testing labs to comply with the requirements set out in EU Directives transposed into national laws and royal decrees, and where they must work subject to standard UNE-EN-ISO 17025, medicine, process control facilities and similar.
