The modern society requires food not only as a source of nutrients and energy, but also as a key factor for increasing people's life- and health-spans. Several years ago, the European Commission funded the research network of excellence NuGO, which is devoted to Nutrigenomics and which had the UIB as one of its founding members. This prompted us to design a new, specialised postgraduate programme which is unique in the world.
In the new millennium, we are starting to unravel the secrets of the human genome. New disciplines and techniques, such as epigenetics and the “omics" techniques (functional genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics) help us understand the complex relationship between gene expression and nutrients and the individual responses to diet. An individual knowledge of the individual genetic response to the daily challenges we have to cope with can help us to protect our health from future metabolic diseases. Nutrigenomics is the modern molecular nutrition and opens the way to a precise, personalised nutrition; one that is designed for each individual in accordance with their gene variants and how gene expression is regulated under different nutritional challenges, among other factors.
What skills will you acquire?
Students will acquire knowledge and skills in the field of nutrigenomics and its application to personalised nutrition, as well as the basic research tecniques applied in the field, but also in the design of new projects and developments, functional foods, aspects related to food safety and efficiency, and specific practical training in research labs or in collaborating enterprises within the sector. They will also develop skills in scientific communication and the scientific method.
What career opportunities will you have?
On the one hand, the master's grants access to PhD programmes (from the two specialisation pathways) and we have extensive experience in training students who have entered different doctoral programmes (including the PhD in Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition) and eventually obtained a PhD degree. Moreover, the master's, in combination with the students' previous studies, increases employment and promotion opportunities in companies in the sector, in fields such as nutrigenomic/nutrigenetic testing, the application of knowledge in diet/health recommendations, in food enterprises with R&D programmes for the development of functional foods, or in the fields of biotechology, food safety and health claims, etc.
High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built. In the results you can find reports on official study programmes.
The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes .
The Master's programme is subject to constant assessment and improvement processes that guarantee that it maintains a certain level of prestige and renown in Europe. You can see the results of the assessment processes in the section on quality .
