General information about Master's theses

The Master's Thesis (TFM) comprises the production of an original academic work specifically written for this purpose, where students must individually apply the skills acquired throughout the programme under the supervision of one or more tutors. Depending on the profiles for each curriculum, the thesis shall enable the assessment of students' professional, educational and/or initial research abilities.

The information below covers each of the stages in TFM academic and administrative management in accordance with the Agreement of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies Management Committee whereby the internal regulations for writing and assessing master's theses at the University of the Balearic Islands are approved and which came into force in the 2020-21 academic year.

Preparation and Assessment Procedures for MNEC Master's Theses

The Master's in Neuroscience lasts for two academic years, given the importance and weight of the master's thesis (TFM)—a mandatory piece of research work.

We recommend students register for the master's thesis in the second year (except in highly exceptional instances) since, in this way, they will not miss the only tutorial for developing their work and then have to re-enrol.

Students may start to develop their thesis at any time over the two academic years.

There are three ways to select the thesis topic:

  1. Contacting the lecturer or researcher from the research group that interests them
  2. Finding a UIB or external research group (IDISBA, Son Llàtzer, Son Espases or any other research institute within or outside of the Balearic Islands)
  3. Contacting the master's thesis coordinators on the programme: Dr Antoni Gamundí and Dr Cristina Nicolau.

When students have an assigned thesis proposal, they may formalise registration during the first or second year via the online app <https://postgrau.uib.es/tfm>.

Assessment Criteria and Procedure

The master's thesis viva takes place in front of a panel comprising three lecturers on the MNEC programme, who will be assigned by the Board of Studies for the master's programme at the start of the academic year.

Procedure:

  • Students write a thesis with different sections: introduction, material and methods, and results and discussion, conclusions, etc. to be submitted to the Centre for Postgraduate Studies (see the procedures section on the website). The number of pages is open, although no more than 40 pages are recommended. The cover must comply with UIB regulations. The format of the rest of the document is unrestricted
  • Students prepare a presentation to defend their thesis
  • The panel is established at the start of every academic year and remains the same throughout the year.

Assessment:

The thesis is marked following two criteria, split across three separate elements:

a) Performance and development of the work produced (40%)

b) Content and formal aspects in the report (30%)

c) Public viva presentation and defence (30%).

These criteria are scored based on two reports:

  1. The tutor report to assess section one (a)
  2. The panel report to assess the remaining two sections (b and c).

First of all, the tutor's report must be submitted to panel members for them to have it during the viva. After the viva, the panel continues to meet in session to fill in its report and the record of the final mark. This will then be submitted to students. The panel's report includes the calculation of the final grade, taking into account the three sections and the percentages.
