General Aims

The main aim of the Master's Degree in Modern Languages and Literatures is to look in-depth into the study and research in different philology fields—literature, linguistics and modern languages. The programme aims to broaden the knowledge acquired on the undergraduate programme in literary and cultural studies, and linguistics and modern languages covered in the master's programme, so that students can
specialise in either field.

In turn, a further general aim on the programme is to provide students with the appropriate resources for critically analysing and interpreting literary and non-literary texts by framing them in their sociocultural production context. This will enable them to undertake research projects, as well as acquire the skills to develop linguistic analysis and intervention projects.

Finally, the programme aims for students to acquire the necessary methodological tools to produce a research project on one of the fields covered by the programme and ensure they are able to present it to both specialised audiences and the general public. Moreover, students should be able to submit their research for publication in indexed journals.

Specific Aims

• Providing theory and practical knowledge about different disciplines in languages for specialisation, including literature, linguistics and modern languages
• Teaching different analytical methods enabling students to analyse texts from literary, linguistic, cultural and historical perspectives
• Fostering strategic skills to apply acquired knowledge so that students are able to find solutions for a range of theoretical and practical problems inherent to language studies
• Developing students’ ability to form opinions about the social responsibilities involved in applying the skills and intellectual maturity acquired on the programme
• Working on communication skills enabling students to convey advanced knowledge in language studies precisely, and in a structured and reasoned way to audiences with varying levels of expertise
• Providing students with the necessary skills to undertake an original research project in one of the programme’s areas, using experimental, applied, theoretical or interpretative perspectives
• Equipping students with advanced training in research methodology for different language knowledge areas
• Teaching learning strategies for independent lifelong learning.

Graduates from the programme in modern languages and literatures are qualified to take the next step in research within higher education. The training they receive enables them to teach different language and literature subjects at all education levels in Spain and overseas thanks to the programme covering all linguistic disciplines. In the same vein, the training received in literature and cultural studies covers the entire history of literature from the classics to contemporary works. This means graduates are armed with the essential tools to understand and analyse different contexts of cultural production. They are fully qualified to produce teaching plans and teach courses in a globalised world in both bilingual and multilingual settings. Moreover, their solid in-depth knowledge of different realities and language issues means they are comfortable with both cultural and functional diversity.

Students on the programme not only acquire teaching skills but also receive specific training for cultural and language planning and management (to work as language consultants, print and audiovisual media advisors, and translators and interpreters, in publishing and the tourism industry, and at libraries and archives), as well as intercultural mediation at public administrations and private corporations.
