The Master’s Degree in Philosophy not only provides graduates with advanced knowledge in the main areas of philosophy (history of philosophy, theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy and philosophy of science), but also with the skills to enable them to work as researchers and pursue further or supplementary training. The different subjects included in the master’s programme have been carefully designed to ensure that students learn what academic research involves and how it fundamentally works (research techniques, proving hypotheses and confirming knowledge, searching for information and data, knowledge communication and transfer, planning, undertaking and problem-solving in research). In turn, the programme fosters students’ critical thinking and their ability to carry out individual and team work. Programme graduates will be able to adapt to different scenarios, in addition to effectively perform a range of tasks.

The programme does not merely aim to lay the foundations for research into different areas of philosophy (history of philosophy, theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy and philosophy of science). The activities that graduates will be able to undertake include:

• Research: the programme provides graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to move into research on philosophy, design and run their own research projects, or join or take part in national and international projects at public or private R&D centres and departments
• PhD Programmes: the Master’s Degree in Philosophy enables graduates to continue on to PhD studies, particularly in philosophy. A master’s degree is a pre-requisite for starting a higher-level professional research career since it provides graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to produce a PhD thesis
• Applied philosophy: philosophy studies provide specialised knowledge and an ability for critical analysis to perform different advisory roles in public and private settings, as well as in the third sector. For instance, taking part in plans and programmes linked to public policies (social, education, etc. at local, regional and national administrations), social interventions and intercultural mediation (at social associations and NGOs), or human resources management (in the private sector). Moreover, philosophy can be used in assessment processes on research ethics, professional ethics, bioethics or hospital ethics committees, etc. In turn, ‘social responsibility and sustainability’ is an expanding area of activity within the business world
• Project management advice: research training opens doors to different areas of knowledge and activity in the public and private productive sector through different project management and advice tasks in R&D, social innovation and cultural and leisure plans. The programme provides graduates with the skills to take part in project design, application and promotion activities, e.g. by documenting, justifying, planning and coordinating processes and human resources, communicating outcomes and promotional activities, etc.
• Communication and marketing: Graduates from the programme will be able to join professional settings linked to different methods of social outreach and communication for specialised knowledge, edit and review texts, write reasoned reports, etc. In this sense, they may take up posts in publishing, in the media and in public or private, internal or external, corporate marketing services.

Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built.
