Entry profile

The entry profile refers to two types of graduates with certain specifications for each:

Block 1. Degrees linked to the fields of language and literature studies, including:

1. Degree in Catalan Language and Literature
2. Degree in Catalan Philology
3. Degree in Catalan Philology and Occitan Studies
4. Degree in Spanish Language and Literature
5. Degree in English Studies
6. Degree in Linguistics
7.  Degree in Literary Studies

Block 2. Degrees linked to the field of education and humanities, as long as their curricula include a minimum of 60 credits in language and literature subjects, including:

1. Degree in Humanities
2. Degree in Primary Education
3.  Degree in Early Childhood Education

Admission requirements

Students interested in applying for a place on the master's programme need to submit their pre-enrolment application within the deadline for each academic year as set by the UIB Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CEP).

The CEP shall analyse and verify that applicants meet the admission requirements, i.e. their degree(s) grant them access to official masters, and notify the applicants about its decision. In accordance with article 16 in RD 861/2010 of 2nd July that modifies RD 1393/2007 of 29th October establishing the organisation of official university studies, the following entry requirements shall be taken into account:

1. In order to be admitted to official master's programmes, applicants will need to hold an official Spanish university degree or one issued by a higher education institution from a member state of the European Higher Education Area that provides entry onto master's programmes.
2. In turn, graduates from systems outside the European Higher Education Area may be admitted without having to have their degrees validated after the university has verified that said degrees have an equivalent level of training to that provided on official Spanish university degrees and which provide entry to postgraduate courses in the country of issuance. In no way shall this admission imply validation of the above degree held by the interested party nor accreditation for any other purpose than to access the master's programme.

Admission requirements and criteria

Once applicants' right to admission for the requested course is verified, the CEP shall pass on their application to the Master's Academic Commission for assessment and decision on admission of the applicants. The CEP shall then send applicants a notification of their admission with the dates for students to formally register on the programme.

With regard to admission to the master's programme, the Masters Academic Committee shall take into account the following admission requirements and criteria, in accordance with article 16 in RD 861/2010 of 2nd July that modifies RD 1393/2007 of 29th October establishing the organisation of official university studies.

Admission requirements

Language requirements:

In order to take the master's programme, students will need to accredit a C1 level or above in Catalan, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching and Assessing (CEFR) from the European Union Council.

This level shall be deemed as accredited for those students who have taken undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Catalan Language and Literature, as well as those in Primary and Early Childhood Education at the University of the Balearic Islands. The same shall be deemed for those from national or overseas universities that offer equivalent Catalan language levels (and which are certified in the corresponding curriculum or academic record).

For those degrees that provide admission to the master's programme but have not covered subjects in Catalan language or literature to ensure C1 level, proof of the latter shall be provided through official certificates or diplomas submitted by students. If you have doubts in this regard, please contact the management team for the master's programme.

Admission criteria

1. Students from the qualifying degrees set out in block 1 in the 'recommended entry profile' section shall be given priority, i.e. degrees linked to language and literature fields of study, including the following: Degree in Catalan Language and Literature; Degree in Catalan Philology; Degree in Catalan Philology and Occitan Studies; Degree in Spanish Language and Literature; Degree in English Studies; Degree in Linguistics, and Degree in Literary Studies. With this block, the following criteria shall be considered in terms of assessing the merits of applicants wishing to be admitted to the master's programme.

1. Average mark of the academic record/transcript for previous studies: 80% of total evaluation.
2. Merits regarding academic and research training, i.e. other titles, collaboration grants, attendance at conferences, seminars or specialised courses linked to the field of language or literature: 10% of total evaluation.
3. Merits regarding professional experience in the field of language or literature management or teaching: 10% of total evaluation.

2. Once the pre-enrolments from block 1 are assessed and organised, applicants falling into block 2 with degrees providing admission shall be weighted, i.e. degrees linked to the field of education and the humanities, as long as the curriculum taken included at least 60 credits in language and literature subjects. With this block, the following criteria shall be considered in terms of assessing the merits of applicants wishing to be admitted to the master's programme.

1. Average mark of the academic record/transcript for previous studies: 80% of total evaluation.
2. Merits regarding academic and research training, i.e. other titles, collaboration grants, attendance at conferences, seminars or specialised courses linked to the field of language or literature: 10% of total evaluation.
3. Merits regarding professional experience in the field of language or literature management or teaching: 10% of total evaluation.

All accreditation documents regarding merits shall be submitted for correct evaluation, in accordance with what is set out by the admissions board. If there is any tie between candidates after applying the weighting percentages, the pre-enrolment date for the programme shall be taken into account to resolve the tie.
 

The Master's in Linguistic and Literary Competence: Research and Teaching has been designed to meet a requirement detected in the teaching and research community in the Balearic Islands—the need for specific training in language and literature that enables graduates from degrees related to philology and education to acquire more in-depth and refreshed knowledge regarding the latest advances in these fields of study.

Specific speciality skills

Advanced Studies of Catalan Language and Literature

• CEELLC1. Interpreting and analysing the different manifestations of Catalan literature and its ethnopoetics based on advanced knowledge of specialised bibliography
• CEELLC2. Selecting and evaluating the appropriate scientific theories and correct methodologies to study Catalan language.

Speciality in General Linguistics

• CEELLC1. Producing scientifically based hypotheses on the development and acquisition of language communication in line with the foundations of general linguistics
• CEELLC2. Understanding and applying scientific terminology in the field of general linguistics.

Speciality in Literary Theory

• CEETL1. Acquiring advanced knowledge in the main reading theories, interpretation and systemic study of literature, with a particular focus on concepts emphasising social aspects
• CEETL2. Critically applying analytical methods that enable in-depth approaches to intrinsic aspects of literary communication and its public impact.

Speciality in Teaching Languages and Literature

• CEEELL1. Designing and applying projects to develop literary skills at different educational levels and in complex cultural settings
• CEEELL2. Transferring theoretical knowledge in language acquisition processes to the study of specific contexts to optimise language learning

Access to PhD studies

Improving professional training and status in the field of education (early childhood, primary, secondary and adult), as well as different professional levels linked to language and literature learning (libraries, language advice, cultural management, etc.).

Distribution of the credits on the master's programme:

• Obligatory credits: 6
• Elective credits (including six for external placements, which are optional): 42
• Master's thesis: 12
• Total credits: 60

The Master's in Linguistic and Literary Competence: Research and Teaching curriculum comprises 24 subjects.

In order to be awarded the master's degree, students shall take 60 credits as follows:

• Six credits in obligatory subjects
• 42 elective subject credits (worth three or six credits each)
• 12 credits for the master's thesis.

The 42 credits for elective subjects must be taken on one or two speciality pathways. The remaining electives may be chosen freely from all electives available on the master's programme.

The four specialities are set as follows:

• Speciality in Advanced Studies in Catalan Language and Literature: 21 credits
• Speciality in General Linguistics: 18 credits
• Speciality in Literary Theory: 18 credits
• Speciality in Language and Literature Teaching: 21 credits

The Master's Degree in Linguistic and Literary Competence: Research and Teaching follows a blended teaching and learning method. With the exception of the external placements and master's thesis, the attended lecture weighting for all subjects is 16%, as per what is set out in University of the Balearic Islands regulations. By way of example, a three-credit subject requires 12 hours of attended lectures. The remaining activities use independent learning, as well as the online platforms and tools. The training activities, teaching methodologies and assessment systems for the different modules are designed and selected to enable students to acquire all skills through the blended training method.
 

Submission and public viva defence of the master's thesis.

Continuous assessment shall be used, as detailed in the course guide for each subject (degree website, 'Subjects' section).
