Master's Degree in Biomedical Research

Academic year 2018-19 | 60 credits | 20 places

What is it?

The Master’s degree programme in biomedical research offers a multidisciplinary education in the field of research in biomedicine with a solid multidisciplinary training in advanced science, integrated with biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and health and disease. The education provided focuses on competitive translational research that contributes to furthering the understanding of the molecular basis of human pathology, as well as discovering and developing new preventative, diagnostic, and treatment measures based on molecular bioscience knowledge.

This Master’s programme has three areas in which students can specialize. To specialize in any one of them, students must pass all corresponding subjects and complete a Master’s thesis (with the support of a tutor) related to the field of study of the chosen specialization.

Students must choose one of the three specializations in order to be awarded a degree.

The specializations that are offered are as follows:

  • Specialization in cancer research,
  • Specialization in metabolic syndrome and ageing research, and
  • Specialization in translational biomedical research.

What will you learn?

During this Master’s programme you will learn how to design experiments and activities that allow for the creation of relevant knowledge in the field of biomedical research while maintaining scientific integrity and respecting the ethical principles of biomedicine. You will be able to come up with precise and replicable results that will allow you to draw valid conclusions in the field of biomedicine. At the same time, you will learn how to manage, analyse, and disseminate information from biomedical research, and you will acquire critical thinking skills and the ability to assess the impact of the results obtained from the research and evaluate the possibility of technology transfer in the expansion of biomedical research. You will develop the ability to follow standards and implement procedures that allow for you to work safely in a biomedical research laboratory.

This programme will also teach you to work in and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in the field of biomedical research. You will learn how to effectively communicate research proposals and results, both orally and in writing, using advanced scientific language.

What will you be able to do once you finish?

This Master’s programme aims to arm researchers with a solid background in molecular sciences so that they can participate in basic, clinical, and translational research in the academic, industrial, and healthcare fields. Thus, graduates from the Master’s degree programme in biomedical research will have plenty to offer potential employers in the professional world.

High-quality official study

Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built. In the results you can find reports on official study programmes.

The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes .

The Master's programme is subject to constant assessment and improvement processes that guarantee that it maintains a certain level of prestige and renown in Europe. You can see the results of the assessment processes in the section on quality.
