Title Description

Candidate profile and admission requirements

Applicants should meet one of the following three sets of criteria:

  • Applicants with a degree from a Spanish institution
    Following the present regulations of the UIB, nationally-agreed requirements and directives established by the European Union, applicants should hold a bachelors degree or equivalent qualification. The following degrees are acceptable: diplomat, architect, technical engineer, advanced engineer and honours degrees.
  • Applicants with a degree from a foreign institution
    Following the present regulations of the UIB, students who hold a foreign higher-education qualification may apply when their foreign qualification is recognised, following due procedure, as equivalent of the Spanish qualification that gives access to the course. Nevertheless, the UIB reserves the right to admit foreign students although their qualifications have not been officially recognised, after verifying that they have been educated to a level equivalent to the Spanish degree system and that they hold the necessary qualifications to study postgraduate courses in their respective country. This process shall be carried out following due process established by the Postgraduate Study Centre.
  • Applicants who have begun PhD studies
    These applicants, following UIB regulations, Royal Decree 778/1998, Royal Decree 56/2005 of 21st January and other current legislation, may study official postgraduate courses and gain the official qualification of Master if they are offered a place and may apply for the recognition of prior learning in the areas of taught courses and research training, following the recognition process set out by the Postgraduate Study Centre. Their application for recognition of prior learning must be addressed to Postgraduate Study Centre.

Should the number of applicants be greater than the number of places offered, the Academic Committee will judge applications according to the following criteria:

  1. Academic CV (up to three points)
  2. Grants awarded (up to two points)
  3. Publications (up to two points)
  4. Attendance at conferences, courses and seminars (up to two points)
  5. Other merits (up to one point)

Academic and Professional Objectives

This course has been designed following the recommendations and criteria of the European Higher Education Area, and its educational aims have been adapted to the so-called ‘Dublin Descriptors’, and the course has been designed to meet the criteria of the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ENQA) and the Joint Quality Initiative.

Academic aims

The Masters in Contemporary Philosophy’s main aim is that students will be able to develop an academic task, complementing previous study and in preparation for future PhD studies. The range of skills covered in the masters and the fact that these are common to all postgraduate programmes guarantee that upon successful completion of the course students will have the skills necessary to study any doctoral programme at the UIB, or begin PhD studies at any Spanish or foreign institution, provided their degree meets the requirements of the course they wish to study. Candidates will be able to write academic pieces correctly, make full use of bibliographical materials, work individually and as part of a team, develop tasks autonomously, disseminate and present their work, and have a range of personal skills that will enable them to carry out their studies satisfactorily. Furthermore, students will acquire the most up-to-date knowledge in their research field, placing them in an excellent situation to progress to PhD study or apply their knowledge to other fields.

Professional aims

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to apply the knowledge acquired over the course of their studies to their daily work, as well as learning the principles that have been shown to provide higher productivity in modern-day businesses and institutions: thinking creatively; working as part of a team; leadership skills; presentation skills; project planning; short, medium and long-term planning. Furthermore, students will have the skills and knowledge needed to work correctly, search for solutions to everyday problems not just within their own business or institution, but also other bodies that may help or cooperate. The course’s high-quality teaching will enable students to enter the professional sector with first-hand and up-to-date knowledge about the pathway of their choosing.

Access to other professional courses and pathways

This course gives access to the PhD programme in Philosophy at the University of the Balearic Islands, thus offering continuity to all those who wish to continue their education. Likewise, the course prepares students to enter PhD studies at other institutions, provided these courses are in the same area of knowledge as this postgraduate course.

Course Structure

The course structure can be found in the publication of BOE No. 244 of October 9, 2009 - res. 16106 [es] and is available in the website - section " Subjects " of this master's degree.

The Masters in Contemporary Philosophy comprises three separate pathways:

  1. Contemporary Philosophical Tendencies;
  2. Science and Philosophy in the Modern Age;
  3. Politics and Society in the Modern Age.

Students must choose one of these pathways and study its relative core subjects, as well as choosing those subjects they consider most appropriate from amongst subjects from optional modules and subjects from other modules. In all cases one optional subject must be chosen from module four. Taught modules must add up to 50 ECTS credits. To complete the course, students must write and defend a dissertation, worth a total of 10 ECTS credits. The dissertation will form part of the student’s chosen pathway. To help with this task, students will have a supervisor, whom they will choose from the teachers who deliver subjects forming part of their pathway.

Final Examination

Since the main educational aim of the course is to offer a complete, agile, flexible and individualised learning experience, subjects are assessed in different ways. Each subject has its own method of assessment adapted to the object of study, and so not all have a final exam. If the subject does have a final exam, this will examine theoretical content and its application, and dates will be set at the beginning of the academic year.

To successfully complete the course, though, students must write and defend a dissertation worth a total of 10 ECTS credits. Students will have a supervisor from the start of the academic year, and the project must be presented within set deadlines and must de defended before a panel of three members assigned by the Academic Committee. The presentation will be subject to a defence of a maximum of twenty minutes, comprising questions posed by the panel and answers from the candidate.

Assessment Criteria and Examinations

The different subjects and pathways comprise specific content in the specific area of area. To pass these subjects students must reach the minimum level of theoretical and practical objectives in each subject. Exams will assess theoretical knowledge and its application. Nevertheless, not all subjects will have a final exam. Students are advised to consult subject descriptions for more information.
