Title Description

Candidate profile and admission requirements

Pre-registration is open to students holding a graduate degree in any scientific field, engineers and architects. Specialised technicians, architectural engineers and first-cycle graduate students with 180 credit degrees (technical studies being the most appropriate background) may also apply, in agreement with the requirements of article 16 and “disposición adicional cuarta” of R.D. 1393/2007 of October 29.

Candidates holding a degree in non-scientific fields may also apply for admission. The Academic Committee will consider their applications and propose the most appropriate pathway in each individual case according to the candidate‘s certified previous academic qualifications.

The Academic Committee may interview candidates before submitting the corresponding report to the Physics Departmental Council.

To apply for admission, students must complete a pre-registration form and hand it in personally or submit it electronically to the relevant staff member at the postgraduate administrative services of the Faculty of Sciences. Students holding degrees from universities other than the UIB must include in their application authenticated photocopies of the relevant documents concerning their degree as well as an academic certification from the University issuing that degree.

The Academic Committee will consider all the pre-registration applications, including the cases involving recognition of credits, and will evaluate the candidate‘s certified qualifications before presenting the recommendation for admission to the Physics Departmental Council. Recommendations shall include pathway suggestions for students whose previous educational background is not the most appropriate for entering the Master‘s programme.

The Physics Departmental Council shall appoint, at the beginning of each academic session, a number of tutors for the Master‘s degree, with a maximum of 10 students each.

Department members holding a PhD degree for at least two years and wishing to supervise Master‘s thesis within the Master‘s programme, shall inform the Academic Committee about the title of the subject before the start of the academic session. The Academic Committee will publicize the list of topics offered to the students who will inform their tutors of their choices during the first semester. Students with a 180 credit degree will choose their Master‘s thesis topic at the start of the second academic year.

If the number of topics offered is less than the number of students enrolled in the Master‘s degree in Physics, the Academic Committee shall decide upon additional topics to meet the demand in consultation with thesis supervisors.

Recognition of credits

Students having started third cycle studies

  • Students having completed a number of school and/or research credits in the PhD Programme in Physics may obtain their official recognition. The criterion used to recognise these credits will be 1,875 × number of credits completed = number of ECTS credits.
  • Students having completed a number of school and/or research credits in other PhD Programmes may also apply for recognition of these credits, which will be resolved by the Academic Committee. The criterion used for recognition being the same as above.

Students not having started third cycle studies

Specialised technicians, architectural engineers and first-cycle graduate students holding a 180 credit degree must take up 120 ECTS credits.

Specialised technicians, architectural engineers and first-cycle graduate students holding a degree of more than 180 credits but less than 240 credits: the number of credits to take up will depend on their (certified) previous academic qualifications.

Students holding 300 credit or 240-credit degrees in Engineering, Architecture or Science degrees must take up 60 credits.

Students holding 300 credit degrees in some non-scientific or technical area may pre-register, and their applications will then be evaluated by the Academic Committee as described above.

Academic and Professional Objectives

The main academic aim is to provide students with a solid interdisciplinary basis for their doctoral studies in a department with a well-established academic and research tradition (25 PhD degrees have been awarded since 2002), as well as granting them actual contact with the world of research, as all the research groups teaching the various Master modules are currently engaged in research projects obtained in competitive calls for proposals sponsored by the EU and/or Spain‘s National Research Plan.

The relevance that research is given in the programme is clearly shown in its own structure, as it requires the student to write a Master‘s thesis on some original research topic.

The courses in the Master‘s degree in Physics have been adapted from the PhD courses offered in the PhD in Physics programme, which has been distinguished with the “Quality Award” by the ANECA (Spain‘s quality agency).

Furthermore, and from a professional point of view, the impressive changes and advances currently taking place in all areas of Physics make it essential for companies to hire graduate students possessing the necessary skills to address and solve problems in a creative and innovative way, with a level of knowledge higher than that typically associated with the average graduate degree. This necessity is especially clear in the case of companies with R+D+I departments.

The interdisciplinary knowledge and skills acquired in the Master‘s degree in Physics are mainly sought, among others, in areas such as

  • Computing, electronics and telecommunications
  • Finances
  • Energy and environmental jobs
  • Pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare providers in general

Access to other professional courses and pathways

Students holding an official Master‘s degree in Physics are eligible for admission to third cycle studies leading to the PhD degree by the University of the Balearic Islands‘ in the Experimental Sciences and Technologies programme.
